A Note about the Internet
Internet safety is an important issue for young children. The Internet is like leaving the security of home and taking a journey out into the world. Most young children need to be accompanied by an adult as they journey outside their home until they are older and wiser about what things are safe and dangerous in the world around us. Web sites, like our Lower School Math Site, contain links to sites "outside on the Internet." As your child leaves "home" on their Internet journey, please make sure that you are there to help guide them. Please remember:
- The Internet is a web of locations with near infinite numbers of paths. It can take just a few clicks to get to other areas on the Web. Even if your child starts at a safe and child friendly page, that page is often part of a larger site with links designed to appeal to any visitor.
- Internet searches can return millions of pages. Sometimes a search term can easily be contained in a less desirable page.
- Commercial sites use many creative solutions to entice Internet users to click on their advertisements. Make sure your child understands that the advertisements are trying to sell them something.
- Have a plan for what to do when a site makes your child feel uncomfortable. Make sure to review how to get back out of a site. Note that some sites open additional windows in an attempt to keep the Internet user interested or stuck at their site.
