Grading

In the 7th Grade Drama class, there are two main objectives. The first is to enable the students to feel more comfortable standing and talking in front of their peers. The second is to let the student understand the concept of listening. Not hearing, but listening. It sounds odd, but in acting, listening is just as important as talking. It is through listening that we make our choices to act.

The grade will not reflect how good of an actor one is, but rather the chances a student takes. The student should use the fullest of their imagination, creativity, know their lines, and work well with others whether on stage or off.

There are many components that will effect grades.
1) Collage/ Puppet and Critique - 2 components to make up one grade
2) Monologue - 1 part
3) Commercials - 1 part
4) Journal Entries for Oral Presentation - 7 entries that will make up one grade
5) Oral Presentation - 1 part
6) Final Scene - 3 components that will make up one grade
7) Three Tests - 3 tests that will make up one grade
8) Attendance
9) Participation
10) Extra Credit
1) Collage/ Puppet and Critique
The students will create a character. After they have created the character they must make a collage or a puppet,  and write a 1/2 page to 1 page story about the character. Each component will be 50% of the grade.

2) Monologue
The student will be asked to create a new character, and write a 1 to 1 1/2 minute monlogue about the character. Students will perform this three times in front of the class. The first two times will be to practice and receive constructive criticism. The third time will be for a grade. Points will be deducted for going under or over the time limit.

3) Commercials
The students will be placed in groups of four or five. They must then create a commercial for a product they wish to sell. The Commercials must last between 1 to 3 minutes long. The group as a whole will receive the same grade.  Students will perform this three times in front of the class. The first two times will be to practice and receive constructive criticism. The third time will be for a grade. Points will be deducted for going under or over the time limit.

4) Journal Entries for Oral Presentation - 7 entries that will make up one grade
a) Students must write weekly about the subject they have chosen.
b) Journals will be graded on content.
c) Incomplete journals will result in the lowering of a grade point each day it is late.
d) The journal entries will later be used as part of the Oral Presentation
e) click here to read the questions that need to be answered for each journal entry
and when each entry is due.

5) Oral Presentation - 1 part
a) click here to read about the Oral Presentation.

6) Final Scene - 3 components (1,2,3 below)  will make up one grade.
a) The students will choose a partner for the final scene.
b) The students will be given information about the scene. This will include the characters and
what the scene is about. From this, the students must write a scene that will last from 4 to 5 minutes.
c) Students will be graded on the following:
     1) The Script - creativity, character development, conflict, length
     2) As a team  - Did the partners work well together. Or did one student carry the scene?
     3) As an individual - How did the student worked as an individual?
d) Students can evaluate themselves by linking to the Scene Evaulation Form Page

7) Three Tests - 3 tests that will make up one grade
Quizzes will be given once every two weeks on readings and discussions. They will be used to reinforce what has been learned, not to trick the student. The three test grades will be combined to make one grade. Students can take the practice tests which are on Mr. Roche's Homepage.

8) Attendance
Acting is communal, and much information is shared. A student who is late 3 times without a note from a teacher will have the letter grade drop by a point. (i.e.: If the student has a current grade of A-, but is late 3 times, the grade will drop to a B+.)

9) Participation
a) As this is an acting class, everyone must perform in front of each other.
b) Behavior: The audience must be silent, as they are participating in watching someone perform. If a student persists on talking during class, his / her  grade will be affected accordingly.

10) Extra Credit
*Students can receive extra credit for attending plays and dance concerts. To receive the credit, they need to bring a program, ticket stub and give a short presentation about the performance to the class.
