Using playwriting as a foundation for this course, students will focus on how to write dialogue for the stage using proper format while learning how to construct a scene. Television and film script writing will also be reviewed, but writing for the stage will be the primary thrust of the course. Each week students will write 5-10 pages of a scene, and then discuss their work with classmates after reading the material aloud. Areas to be discussed will include, but not be limited to; character development, conflicts, raising the stakes, where to find material to write about, using props in the script, opening and closing the scene. Students will also learn about the difference in writing for the stage versus film, television and commercials.
