The Fifth Grade Playwrights Festival
Each year fifth graders participate in the Philadelphia Young Playwrights program, beginning work in November on plays they submit for competition in the spring. Students will perform three works for parents in April.

The following are excerpts from Rebecca Luzi article featured in the William Penn Charter School Magazine of Spring 2003.

"As part of Penn Charter’s fifth grade language arts curriculum, students participate in the Philadelphia Young Playwrights program, an annual competition designed to encourage creativity, tolerance and the exchange of ideas among young people. More than 1,500 area
students in city, suburban, public and independent schools participate in the competition....

Students begin by learning about characters and dialogue, and studying the “arc of action,” the build-up toward conflict and resolution. They read published plays as well as plays written by other children and submitted in past years to the competition...

professional playwrights from Philadelphia Young Playwrights, the organization that sponsors the competition, come to the classroom to work with students..."
