Penn Charter requires one trimester of Religious Studies in the Upper School, to be elected in the tenth, eleventh or twelfth grade. The department offers a range of subjects which include Biblical Studies, ethics, Quakerism, religious history, comparative religions and service learning.
At the Middle School level, seventh graders are required to take a one trimester course in Quakerism which explores the faith, history and practice of Friends.
At both levels, class sessions are designed to provide students with an in-depth
understanding of the role religion plays in shaping our own lives and our ultimately
guided from within, and not from an external authority. Thus, the department does not seek
to impose or to convince students to adopt the convictions of the Religious Society of
Friends or any other church. Our study of religion is conducted with respect to the
diversity of religious backgrounds students bring to the school community.
